Michael Lean

Medical Consultant and Nutritionist

A prominent nutritionist, his work on the link between waist circumference and chronic heart disease and type 2 diabetes has been hugely influential in their prevention and treatment.

The following achievement is associated with Michael Lean:

Proving that waist circumference is an indicator of the risk of heart disease
The waist circumference measurement, proposed by Mike Lean, also turned out to be more accurate than BMI as a predictor of obesity-related health risks, from diabetes, CHD, stroke, sleep apnoea syndrome, depression.

Biography

Michael Lean has held the Rank Chair of Human Nutrition since 1992. He is also head of the department of Human Nutrition. He trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge and St Bartholomew's Hospital subsequently specialising in general medicine, diabetes and endocrinology.
