Biography

John Eldridge was appointed as the University's inaugural Professor of Sociology in 1972. He was Emeritus Professor of Sociology until his death in 2022.

John Eldridge gained a BSc (Econ) from the University of London, and an MA from Leicester University. His professional career began as a lecturer at the University of York, and then as Professor of Sociology at the University of Bradford. At Glasgow, he continued his academic work on Industrial Sociology and on Max Weber. On taking up his post he established a Glasgow-based Centre for Industrial Democracy and Participation. He was also a founder member of the media analysis research group the Glasgow Media Group. He was President of the British Sociological Association 1979-1981. In 2018, he was presented with the British Sociological Association’s Distinguished Service to Sociology award, and an Honorary D Litt from the University of Edinburgh.
